Imara - Wednesday, December 12, 2001, 7:43 PM --------------------------------------------- You walk toward the bustling Weyrhall. Weyrhall(#333RDJ$) Thick stone walls rise from the granite tiled floor towards the large crossbeam rafters that comprise the high ceiling of this impressively sized building. Broad, deep-silled windows look out on three sides of the hall, easily closed during Threadfall by the metal shutters, but shaded during the day by fabric blinds. On the south wall, a large tapestry and painting have been hung with pride, though they provide conflicting images that may disturb some. Near the kitchen entrance, a long serving table has been set up and close by trestle tables have been placed in parallel -- some with benches and others with chairs, padded with comfy cushions in a myriad of greens. The heavy main doors, leading out to the flagstone courtyard, are usually propped open to let cool breezes pass through the hall, and to cool off anyone working the heavy loom that has been placed in one corner, a task often threaded and in progress there. Beams of sunlight slice into the Hall from the west, turning the walls a ruddy shade of gold. A seaward breeze has begun to flow now, carrying with it the aromas of redfruit and roasting meat from the nearby kitchens. There are numerous doors leading in and out of here: iron-bound doors to the west opening onto the courtyard, a swinging door on hinges into the kitchen, and a carved door on the southern wall into the Infirmary among them. Prominently placed, a massive serving table stands ready to accommodate weyrfolk and guests. In the recesses hang a number of paintings and tapestries. "Evening," she says, nodding in particular to Theida. Kenzie nods. "You could say I am. I want it, too - that's what I'm here for, now. But mostly because it'll get her to be a bit less needing about it. She's an absolute sweetheart, but she can be somewhat picky." Like dragon, like rider, eh? A grin goes to Imara as she enters. Theida beams, "Well, that's good to hear. But then, that's why you were searched and Impressed and graduated. You had what it takes to fight Thread." She looks up to her Wingleader, "Imara! Come sit," she offers, pushing out the chair next to her. Imara sits down next to Theida and looks at both of the other greenriders. "So how are we all this evening?" she asks, not stopping for an answer before she continues. "Kenzie, how've you and Mirenth been?" Kenzie takes another slurp of her juice and grins. "We've been wonderful. She's... impatient, but very ready. I'm... adjusting, still, but good." Imara grins back. "Sounds about right. Ready to be out of Dawnwind and up fighting with the rest of us?" Theida smiles brightly, rather proudly, as she regards her mentee. "You said you and Mirenth were eager to get off message duty..." Kenzie nods. "Definitely. And yes, we are. Her especially. I like visiting the other places, but she... she just wants to flame." Imara chuckles and turns to Theida. "Hey Theida, don't you know of something else they could be doing? You've got that thing that Kenzie and Mirenth could probably use? I believe now's a good time..." Theida beams knowingly, though her tone feigns confusion, "Have something?" she asks, glancing upward. "Oh! Oh yes, why I do have something. Do you think she really wants it?" she asks her Wingleader, eyeing Kenzie at the same time. Imara gives the young greenrider a thoughtful look. "Hmm. I think she could definitely benefit from it. We can only hope that she'll want it. Maybe if you show it to her, she can decide?" Kenzie glances from Imara to Theida, looking mildly confused. "What are you all talking about?" Kenzie has no idea. Blank look. Oy. Theida reaches her hand into the large, beaten up bag that's alway near her. "Well, I should have a few in here someplace. Crammed 'em in here for just such an occasion," she adds, rummaging around. "Oh, I've got it." And she pulls out a patch, that same patch that's worn by every member of the Starflame wing. "Interested?" she asks, holding the patch before the younger greenrider. Imara just grins at Kenzie, her vibrant green eyes twinkling. Kenzie's eyes go wide as she sees the patch. She glances from Theida to Imara and back to Theida. "You ask if I'm interested? Who in their right mind would say no?" She pauses. "Mirenth is *very* interested." Theida chuckles, looking very pleased indeed. "We'd be honored to have you as part of our wing," she replies. Imara nods in agreement with Theida. "We'd love to have both you and Mirenth in the skies with us, and on the ground... and anywhere else the wing may go." Kenzie smiles. A very large smile. "We'd be honored to be a part of your wing. We'd be very, *very* honored." Imara smiles back. "Welcome, then. You're now a part of Starflame." Theida grins, "Excellent, then it's all settled. Mind you, drills are always extra taxing when we first get new wingmates, just because everyone is adjusting," she warns, pushing her totally forgotten and likely cold stew aside. Kenzie grins. "That's great. We can't wait to fly with you." Eyes close for a minute. "Speaking of we, Mirenth needs me to fix something. I'm very sorry I must go so soon, but thank you so much!" A final large smile is flashed as she hurries out the door with a wave. Kenzie walks toward the Courtyard. Kenzie has left. Imara lets out a soft, satisfied sigh. "That's one of the best parts of wing leadership. It's always gratifying to see that look on their faces when they see that gorgeous patch." Theida grins at her Wingleader, "Too true. I'm glad she's so excited," she mentions, staring after Kenzie for a moment. "It is a beautiful patch," is added as she get up to head towards the serving table. "Need anything?" "I could use a bit of juice," Imara replies. "Just a couple more weyrlings, I think, and we'll have 'em all for now. Then perhaps we can get into some new drills and activities." Theida pours two glasses of juice and returns to the table, "As much as I like fresh riders, it'd be nice to not be readjusting for new numbers and new capabilities all the time," she thinks aloud, handing over Imara's glass. Imara shrugs as she takes the glass and sips from it. "Well, it's a part of life. There're always new things coming and old things going. I guess I'm used to it by now." Theida takes a long gulp of her juice. "Sometimes it's just frustrating that as soon as we reach our peak, we get new pairs. But really, in the long run, it's best. I mean, they come with new ideas and plenty of energy." Imara nods. "Sometimes it can be annoying to get comfortable with everyone, then have to integrate new people, but you're right about the long run. They come with fresh ideas, and it really keeps us on our toes." Theida lifts her glass, "Shards yeah," she toasts. "And it keeps me busy. At this point, I don't know what I'd do if I actually had free time." Imara lifts her own glass and grins. "I don't actually mind it. It's work that I mostly enjoy, so I don't always notice about not having as much free time." Theida nods, "I could deal with a little less hidework though. It's one thing to have a good strenuous drill, another thing to have your hand cramp up. Sometimes I wonder if maybe we should just hire scribes." Imara nods. "True. I could do with a bit less hidework, too, sometimes." She grins. "Maybe we could delegate some of it to aspiring wingriders who think they're bored..." Theida grins, "That's not a bad idea. Who do you think would be up for it though? I know a few of them might not be as serious about hidework as they are about drills and 'Fall." Imara smiles knowingly. "Oh, I could probably find a few ambitious riders. They might decide otherwise, though, once they saw the piles of hides." Theida grins, "And I wouldn't blame them at al. I know I didn't feel nearly as ambition when that first stack of hides reached -my- weyr. And at first it took foever. I can get it done in probably half the time now." Imara chuckles and sips her juice. "Same here, when I was promoted to Wingsecond. I knew there would be some hidework involved, but I didn't know nearly how much. But I believe it's worth it." Theida nods, "And at least we don't have to deal with all the hidework for all the wings. I don't know how L'mir handles it all." Imara shakes her head. "Not to mention all the other stuff a Weyrleader has to deal with. Wingleading is plenty for me." Theida grins, "And Wingseconding is plenty for me. I'm completely satisfied with the hidework I have." She gulps down the last of her juice, smacking her lips. "Faranth that was good. Nice combination of fruits." Imara finishes her own juice and nods. "I've become an obsessive juice drinker since I came here. Back home we had juices, but they didn't have that extra special oomph, for lack of a better explanation." Theida chuckles, "Freshness? Nothing like juice from a fruit still warm from the sun. Where are you from again? I can never seem to keep it straight." Imara smiles. "Igen Hold. Born and raised there for twelve turns." She raises an eyebrow thoughtfully. "You know, I don't think I've ever asked where you're from." Theida grins, "Ista Weyr. Genuine weyrbrat. I still go back now and then, Didea's there and alot of my friends. Do you go back to Igen often?" Imara shrugs. "Oh, sometimes. My family's pretty spread out, so only my parents and the youngest siblings are still at Igen. But I visit every once in awhile to keep in touch." Theida nods, "Ysabeth doesn't mind me going home, there are a few bronzes there she's got her eye on," she chuckles, "How does Yishenth like going back to Igen?" Imara glances in a vaguely northern direction. "She doesn't like to stay long. The surroundings aren't familiar enough, and she thinks it's too dry. Also, there aren't many other dragons around for her to talk with." Her eyes unfocus for a quick moment. "That reminds me, though, Yishenth wants a bath tonight, so I'd better get going." Theida nods, "Yeah, I'd better get up to bed myself. It was good to get to chat with you for a while about something other than drills and reports." She gets up from her chair and slings the large back over her shoulder. Imara grins, nodding in agreement. "Have a good night," she says as she stands and starts towards the courtyard with a wave. You walk over to the Courtyard.
